International #FreeWebSearch Day 2025 with Contributions from two OSF Ethics Working Group Members

Every year on and around 29 September, #FreeWebSearch Day brings people and organisations together to campaign for diverse, open and transparent internet search. The aim is to provide information about internet search and explain how it works. To encourage people to think about how important web search is for all of us today – and why it must be free and open. To show how we can search the internet better, more securely and more reliably.

This year’s #FreeWebSearch Day will see contributions from two members of the Open Search Foundation’s Ethics Working Group:

Noor Ahsan Fathima, who has worked at CERN for the past several years, has brought her vision for rethinking digital accessibility and information equity to life with Nooon, a Search Engine for people with disabilities based on the Open Web Index.

This year’s #FreeWebSearch Day also marks the launch of the #FreeWebSearch Charter, which was developed with significant input from the Open Search Foundation’s Ethics Working Group, in collaboration with experts from academia, civil society and the media. On 29 September, the day of the launch, Christine Plote, co-founder of the Open Search Foundation and project lead of the Charter, will present an online talk explaining the Charter’s objectives, development process, and ten core principles.
